The Sakhi collection, which is the creation of mother-daughter design duo – Chandra and Neeta, is known for the modern twist on traditional saree designs. Colours paint a vivid image of festivals and tradition. Keeping this in mind, the new collection has shades of red, yellow and green, which represent the colours of kumkum, turmeric and neem leaves, respectively.
Besides colour, crafts also play an important role in transforming sarees into exquisite works of art that any modern Indian woman would like to possess. So, this festive season Sakhi’s designers have handpicked five Indian crafts, which will be showcased in the new festival inspired collection, as a sort of homage to the great Indian crafts. Like with all Sakhi products, the collection will feature garments that give a modern twist to traditional design.
Sakhi has an on-going initiative for promoting and keeping alive traditional Indian crafts such as Kanchivaram weaving, Kalamkari, Hand Block printing, Cut work and Hand embroidery. Chandra and Neeta are passionate about helping to preserve these crafts, especially in the face of the availability of cheaper imported silk yarn from China and power looms that are threatening to wipe out these ancient crafts. Working directly with the craftsmen helps in empowering them while simultaneously bringing the designers’ ideas to life.
With this in mind, the festive collection will feature five traditional crafts that come to life with the Sakhi vision of adding a contemporary twist that modern-day Indian women look for. The new collection, priced between Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 12,000, is available at Sakhi boutiques in Indirangaar, Jayanagar and small-shop in Sadashivanagar, besides the online store.
