But, Uppada is even more famous for its popular handlooms. Gifted weavers well versed in the famous Uppada handloom weaving populate the town. Uppada is well known for its Jamdani Handloom. The Jamdhani weaving is of Bengali origin. Jamdahni style declined after the industrial revolution in Europe during the 1800s, as it couldn't compete against the Manchester Mills. Now in the last few decades, sale of Uppda cotton and now recently uppada silk has revived. Making of Uppada sarees start with the yarn. First, the yarn is washed and dipped in the required color and the yarn is kept turned so that the color becomes durable. Then the yarn is washed, dried and starched and loaded into handloom as warp and wept, the vertical and horizontal threads in a weave. Uppada silk weavers use 100 counts for the warp and 100 for the wept. The count defines the number of yarns and in turn the quality and feel of the fabric. Two Uppada’s weavers work on a single loom using the traditional Jamdani weaving. They create rich patterns using gold and silver zari for which Uppada weavers are well known. The weavers normally use Frame looms. The looms are fixed in a frame with loom peddle at floor level. The weaver sits on a stool and uses his hands and legs to weave. The handloom weaves of Uppada are famous for their softness and durability. They are soft and comfortable to wear and can be worn in all seasons. An Uppada saree will cost anywhere from Rs 5,000 to 80,000. Uppada silk (Uppada Pattu sarees) and cotton sarees have become popular with a wide collection of latest designs in beautiful colours and are reaching a large clientele worldwide. For wedding and formal gatherings, Uppada silk sarees are much sought after. The weavers pass on their knowledge from generation to generation by tradition. Unfortunately less and less from the new generation choose weaving as a profession. The relatively higher price range of handlloom sarees compared to power looms makes life difficult for the famed weavers of Uppada. The handloom industry is looking for survival. Award of Geographical Indicator (GI) registration helped Uppada. Indian women shopping in stores and online from around the world could help sustain these talented weavers. Today, you can buy Uppada sarees in all major Indian cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai. If you live in the USA or Canada, there are many online channels to buy from.[ - ]
